IWD 2023: Embracing Equity
In preparation for International Women’s Day, HNMCS heard from the Student Life Council each morning as they highlighted prominent women in the global community. Students chose to share the accomplishments of women from several different areas of society including STEM, sports, arts, environmental leaders, Women of Colour, and women in leadership positions around the world. The council aimed to inspire students at HNMCS with the amazing stories of women such as Violet King, Greta Thunberg, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose.
On March 8th, the HNMCS community gathered together to hear about this year’s theme for International Women’s Day. Members of the Student Life Council began by sharing the significance of International Women’s Day and then focused on this year’s theme of Embracing Equity. Highlighting the difference between equality and equity was central to this year’s theme as well as the concept that ‘equal opportunities may no longer be enough’ in helping women achieve their goals. This was an important time for members of the HNMCS community to reflect on the significant contributions that women continue to make to our world. Following the presentation, students made International Women’s Day bracelets to commemorate the occasion.
