Practical Science

For some in society, science can instill a certain level of fear. The thought of understanding quasars, the Krebs cycle, or stoichiometry is a major worry for parts of the general population. One way to overcome such concerns is to teach these and other potentially daunting topics through practical kinaesthetic activities. Practical science teaching has been shown to improve students' scientific literacy and critical thinking, and significantly increase levels of understanding. Not to mention all of the soft skills that employers and universities are placing a great emphasis on, curiosity, collaboration, and problem-solving to name a few.

At HNMCS, we are fortunate enough to have the space, time, and equipment to bring so many practical science activities to the fingertips of the student body. Grade 10 students examining their cheek cells at 1000x magnification, Grade 11s dissecting a fetal pig to study vital biological systems, Grade 12 chemists synthesizing aspirin, and our student-led medical HOSA group learning how to treat burn injuries are only some of the activities that have taken place on the 3rd floor in the past month.

Each time these activities are carried out, the students share their enthusiasm for the subject with open-ended discussion questions, a calm working manner, and a positive can-do attitude. Science is not supposed to be easy, but we will endeavour to find ways that support and extend our students’ understanding and interest.
