Athletics: A Winter Update

The StargazerNews

A busy winter season saw HNMCS field six teams that involved over 80 girls from Grades 5-12.

Volleyball

The U14 Volleyball team began the season very strong with a Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) tournament victory. After finishing fourth in their division in CISAA, they ended the year on a strong note with a 2-0 record at their end of season event.

The Senior Volleyball team finished first place in their division with an impressive 5-1 record. After a nail biting five set victory over Pickering College in the semifinals, the team faced St. John’s-Kilmarnock in the finals but came up just short, earning a silver medal. Special mention to our graduating players Sara R. ‘23 and Mariana A. ‘23.

Badminton, Floor Hockey & Swimming

The winter season also saw the introduction of two new teams and the return of an old team in badminton, floor hockey, and swimming. For badminton, it was our first ever time participating in the CISAA Senior Girls Badminton team, and the team improved each and every game. The U12 Floor Hockey team gave up their recess to practice multiple times a week, and that hard work paid off with an awesome tournament that saw the team finish first in their group with an undefeated record. Although the girls lost in the championship, they were extremely proud of their effort. After missing two years due to COVID, the swim team returned with a vengeance. Special mention to Victoria B. ‘27 and Ella K. ‘28 for winning gold and silver medals at the CISAA Championships.

Senior Hockey

The Senior Hockey team returned to CISAA league play after a two-year hiatus due to COVID. With a record 24 girls on the team, the Stars played more than 10 games, including participating in a tournament in Montreal before Christmas. The season ended with our alumni game that saw the return of several former Stars hockey players, including Kathryn Raitano ‘21, Ashley Pathmanathan ‘21, Isabella Peccia ‘20, Cassandra Yacynowych ‘20, Natalie Cimerman ‘20, and Alyssa Raitano ‘19. A huge thank you to our graduating seniors from this year’s team: Megan E. ‘23, Sophia G. ‘23, Demi P. ‘23, Brigitte R. ‘23, Leah R. ‘23, Davis W. ‘23 and Sonya Y. ‘23.
