HNMCS Robotics has been hard at work so far this season! This year, we hosted our third annual Engineering Career Night and attended Ra Cha Cha Ruckus in Rochester, NY.

On October 17th, we held the third annual Engineering Career Night with Orbit Robotics. The event was a great success with over 70 people attending. Engineering Career Night is primarily intended for high school students, with the goal of helping them better understand available career choices within the engineering profession. The evening hosted six engineers from traditional disciplines of electrical, civil and mechanical as well as aerospace, systems design and environmental. The engineers candidly discussed their pathway from undergraduate programs to career choices that allowed them to change disciplines and travel the world. Students from grades 9 to 12 were able to see connections between their high school education and engineering.

“The presentation by the environmental engineer was very informative and taught me a lot about the environment and how to take care of it. She also taught me a lot about different animal species and in which environments they live in. I would definitely recommend attending events like this.“ Sofia Anunciaco, ‘23

HNMCS Robotics also attended Ra Cha Cha Ruckus, an off-season competition. We went undefeated in the qualifying matches and advanced to the quarter-finals as the second ranked team out of 42. We were Alliance Captains of alliance #2 with teams 4039, 2228 and 1285. We are very proud of our team as this was a great way to finish off our rookie season!

It was a bittersweet weekend for the grade 12s as Ruckus marked the final chapter for them as members on FRC Team 7659. Kathy Ou Yang, ‘20 who graduates this year said “Ruckus was especially great because this is my last year. I really enjoyed bonding with the girls as well as being able to connect with them at off site events. It is wonderful seeing other girls that are interested in STEM at Ruckus.” Those sentiments were echoed by her classmate Yixin Zhang, ‘20 who said “It was amazing to see the potential in robotics and to connect with different teams from all across Canada and the USA. As a grade 12 student, it is very sad for me to be leaving FRC Team 7659 next year. Ruckus was the first robotics event that I ever participated in and will always have a special place in my heart.”
